When CBS made lovely promos

Hard to believe it's the same network as the one airing this ad.

This is from 1966. What a difference 43 years makes. (Thanks to friend of the blog Arlen Peters for alerting me to this.)

I saw this on CBS Sunday Morning this past weekend. I remember when it first aired. Nice and sweet.

Ah, the days when they were artistic enough to use classical music. No more. Our kids know nothing about the arts and the classics, esp classical music. I remember as a kid when leonard bernstein had a highly rated show explaining classical music to kids!!

I remember that one! So glad you posted it. PBS had one I loved back in the late sixties with a chorus line of polka-dancing Santas.

Oh, does that bring back memories! I remember that spot (and still love it).

Even more....remembering when TV spots (let alone one sponsored by the network!) ran :60.

I grew up in rural Tennessee. Back in those pre cable days if you were in a remote area like us you had a large antenna on your roof and had to rotate it to pick up televison signals. We were over 100 miles away from Nashville but only 60 miles away from two towns of about 50,000 people. One town had an ABC affiliate and one had NBC. Consequently since we didn't have a mechanical roter and had to manually spin the outside antenna, we saw very little CBS. But I do remember these commercials from the few times we watched that network.

These minimal line drawings were also used by the Alka-Seltzer company for a line of commercials at about the same time.

And did you see the graphic at the end? Seasons Greetings? Now you've given Bill O'Reilly fodder for claiming the war on Christmas reached into the sixties!!

Here's something else along those lines: A Miller High Life commercial from the late '70s. We had a friend who worked at Miller Brewing in Milwaukee, and she said people would call the brewery year after year to find out when the ad would air.

Has anyone mentioned taht was back in the day when CBS was "The Tiffany Network"? Bill Paley has been spinning in his grave for decades.

Hey, I'd be happy if they'd just bring the Norelco Santa back again.

I had to post this on my Facebook page. Thanks Ken! And thanks to "DwWashburn", your comment about Loofah O'Reilly was hysterical. I had to add that as well. (Giving you proper credit, of course!)

Make the "Tiffany" reference to today's CBS execs and they'll think you're talking about the late '80s pop star, the one who voiced Judy Jetson in a "Jetsons" revival movie.

wv: "blues" -- what today's TV execs give me. Ivy League degrees, yes; entertainment smarts, no (much less heart and soul).
